Technical Terms in the Textile and Apparel Industry
#
- 5-threaded side seams
- Safety-stitched seams, located on the sides of a garment.
- 1x1 ribbed cuffs with elastane
- Part of the sleeve that surrounds the wrist with a knitted fabric of synthetic fiber or spandex that forms stretch marks, of great resistance and elasticity.
A
- Absorption
- Ability of a tissue to absorb a liquid.
- Antipilling
- Own treatment of the fleece and brushed fabric, which minimizes the formation of the pellets of yarn or pilling that arise by the loosening of the fabric.
- Antioxide clasp
- Closure or metal connecting element, processed to prevent oxidation in washes.
- Anatomical design
- Design that adapts to the shape of the body without having to be adjusted and preventing the muscles from staying in tension.
- Armhole
- Measure of sleeve from the upper part of the shoulder to the lower part of the armpit. According to the design, in a shirt corresponds to the seam between the fabric that makes the sleeve and the one that makes the trunk.
B
- Breathable fabric
- Fabric that facilitates the corporal perspiration, avoiding the soaking and allowing air drying.
- Belt loops
- Pieces of fabric that are sewn at the waist vertically to accommodate the belt and that it does not move relative to the trousers.
- Bass with side adjusters
- Bottom of a garment with adjustable elements to the sides, usually plastic or metal, that fit the garment.
- Bandana
- Triangular or square shaped scarf, which is tied around the head or neck for decorative or protective purposes.
- Brushed fleece
- Fabric subjected to a process that creates a padding pleasant to the touch and turns it into a thermal insulation.
- Bellows
- Folding made by two parallel folds that come together, distributing the fabric on both side inside the garment.
- Butyl valve
- System that regulates the circulation of liquids and gases through a moving part that partially obstructs holes or conduits.
C
- Compacted finish
- Treatment that prevents uncontrolled shrinkage of knitwear.
- Combed cotton
- Process that provides the highest quality to cotton spinning
- Covered seams
- Fabric reinforcement that is placed on the seams to give them strength and durability, often used also for aesthetic purposes.
- Clasps
- Simple type of fastener or union element that is used to hold two pieces (or two parts) of a textile garment.
- Cuff
- Opening of the sleeve where the hand comes out and the inner part closest to the wrist.
D
- Double pique knit
- Double-stitch knitted fabric for collecting and generating the effect of small holes. They are obtained through a selection of meshes and coats. Very used in sportswear.
E
- Elastane
- Synthetic fiber of great elasticity and resistance.
- EVA
- Non-toxic thermoplastic polymer material, used in creative leisure applications.
- Eyelets
- Buttons, adjusters or handles eyelets.
F
- Fitted cut with tweezers
- Form that acquires a garment by foldings in the production, to adjust and to fit the body.
- Flap pocket
- Piece that closes, adorns or hides the top of a pocket or zipper.
- Fleece fabric
- High thermal insulation fabric that imitates, with synthetic materials, the woolen fabric.
- Front pleated skirt with straps
- Women's garment that covers the waist down, with several pleats in the front and side straps for a better fit.
G
- Gauge
- Unit for measuring thickness in very fine materials or fabrics.
I
- Inner brush
- Treatment that prevents uncontrolled shrinkage of knitwear.
- Injected zipper to tone
- Toothed mesh zipper in plastic that joins two textile parts and has the same color of these.
- Inner culotte
- Culotte designed to not wear underwear, improve perspiration and avoid chafing.
- Inner slip
- Mesh fabric, very breathable and comfortable, that is placed in pants to act as underpants. It is very common in sports pants.
J
- Jacquard
- Fabric that is characterized by its prints with geometric figures.
K
- Knit waistband
- Woven waistband made of knit to fit better the silhouette.
- Knitted collar
- Flap of a garment, made of knitwear, as an ornament or coat of the neck.
- Kangaroo pocket
- : Front pocket that has two side openings for the hands but inside is a single pocket.
- Kangaroo style pocket
- Pocket similar to the kangaroo pocket, arranged in a garment with front zip. Its interior is not communicated, being to all effects two independent pockets.
L
- Leggins
- Tight and elastic women trousers.
M
- Microfibre
- Very fine synthetic fiber, composed mostly of polyester and polyamide, to make a nonwoven fabric.
- Multi stretch
- Element or fabric that stretches.
- Mesh pocket
- Fabric-based pocket, usually open-stitch with breathable or aesthetic use.
N
- Nylon handles
- Bags and backpack grippers made of elastic and resistant textile fiber fabric.
- Narrow plait bottoning
- Top of shirts and polo shirts where buttons and buttonholes are distributed.
P
- Placket
- Top of a Polo shirt in which buttons and buttonholes are distributed.
- Pique technical fabric
- Special fabric for the sport, with small hollows that facilitate the corporal perspiration.
- Perforated handle
- Zipper handle that has a hole in its end.
- Pellets or pilling
- Phenomenon that causes the formation of small knots or bobbles on the surface of the fabrics and which may detract from the aesthetic value of the garment.
- pocket mesh
- Woven mesh pocket that allows inside visibility, very useful in backpacks or carrying bags.
- Pattern making
- Design and creation system of a garment.
- Pleated chest
- Dressmaking based on folds, for chest area for aesthetic purposes.
- Pique knit
- Fractional fabric of twelve in twelve threads. It is characterized in that half of the raised threads of each section alternately change in each pass. It usually has a greater presence of synthetic fibers in its composition.
Q
- Quilted insertions
- Fluffy anatomical elements, inserted in a garment as element of security in blows and falls. They are usually used in work or sportswear.
R
- Ribbed
- Fabric with hollow weave ligament that creates an exceptionally elastic and solid appearance fabric. In the longitudinal grooving the ribs originate by float, that is, the weft thread is placed on several threads of the warp.
- Ranglan sleeve
- Type of sleeve that comes from neck line, covering the shoulder to the wrist.
- Reverse flag
- Back of the neck part of a Polo shirt printed with the colors of the flag.
- Reinforced elastic finishing
- Finishing of a garment with elastic material and some type of seam or reinforcement element.
- Rounded botton
- Bottom of a garment with a slightly curved cut.
- Reflective band or printing
- Security element that illuminates before any beam of light, becoming visible in the dark.
- Reinforced base
- Rigid base that gives consistency and protection for the bottom of backpacks and bags.
- Ribbed cuffs
- Part of the sleeve that surrounds the wrist with a stretch knit fabric with stretch marks or lines.
S
- Sleeveless empire cut
- Type of cut used on the upper part of the female body, which fits under the chest, enhancing it.
- Semi fitted cut
- Type of making that slightly adjusts a garment to the body.
- Seamed side seams
- Reinforced seams that join the side pieces of a garment.
- Silver injected zipper
- Toothed mesh zip in plastic that joins two textile parts and is silver in colour.
- Stoppers
- Plastic or metal element for fastening cords or tapes.
- Simulated pocket
- Pocket purely ornamental, no more useful than aesthetics.
- Synthetic fibers
- 100% chemical fibers, both in the synthesis of the raw material and manufacturing.
- Stripe
- Textile tape to adorn a garment or accessory.
- Sewing pleats
- Small tweezers sewn on garments, usually in trousers, that allow a greater range of movement and comfort.
- Safety backstitch
- Sewing in a garment, just at the edge of the fabric.
- Single jersey
- Point where the structure of the right and the reverse are woven into a single bed, allowing good transverse elasticity.
- Sandwich
- Fabric ornament that lies between the two layers of a visor.
- Screenprinting
- Printing technique which, through a mesh, transfers the ink to the textile support.
- Shoft Shell
- Type of garment intended to act as a barrier against elements of bad weather.
- Sublimation
- Printing technique that uses heat to transfer the ink to the item to be marked.
T
- Thermal t-shirt
- Garment that keeps the body warm and dry during the practice of a sport.
- Taffeta
- Material in which the labels of the garments are usually made.
- Tubula fabric

U
- Unfinished Rib trimmed 2x1
- Rib sewn so that its edge is left untreated or made.
- Under elastic cord and stoppers
- Bottom of a garment with elastic elements and thin rope with plastic or metal parts that make the stop and that fit the garment.
- Under shaped
- Bottom of a garment with some type of special cut.

- Velcro
- Closing system formed by two tapes that allow the hold, creating a fast and simple fastening.
